CQUniversity - Case study

CQU

The introduction of new Queensland building fire and safety regulations prompted one prestigious educational institution, CQUniversity to contact Concept Safety Systems for help following the realisation that it was facing the risk of not being compliant to the Building Fire Safety Regulations:2008.

With an already dated system CQUniversity turned to Concept Safety Systems to completely revise its emergency evacuation training strategies which it did with its unique Fire Evacuation Program, providing the university with an instantly more efficient solution that was easier to manage and, better still, operated online.

“Prior to the programme, our safety procedures were due for update,” explains the University’s Manager of Health, Safety, Environmental and Training Unit, Narelle Stubbins. “We were only training our staff face to face and on an annual basis, which was not suitable for our organisation that is heavily reliant on online communication.”

One of the first education facilities to adopt the interactive online programme, CQUniversity is now able to ensure staff are fully prepared and trained in how to respond to all emergency scenarios within just 48 hours of being employed.

“Concept Safety Systems’ Fire Evacuation Program has absolutely blown me away” says Mrs Stubbins. “Their vision for the future is incredible and their technology is unlike any other system. It’s really opened up a whole new way of managing safety and evacuation procedures, which is essential to every business.”

A large scale organisation that houses thousands across its five campuses, CQUniversity required an extensive, tailored emergency response system that would completely update its floor plans, exit strategies and training systems so that they would be easily accessible by any staff member at any time.

“As with any large organisation, there are always risk factors involved in the running of our business and a lot of lives are, in good faith, placed in our hands every day so having an in-depth safety strategy in place that is adaptable and easy to learn and manage is absolutely fundamental,” says Mrs Stubbins.

“The Fire Evacuation Program has really proven invaluable in this regard. We can now monitor and be assured that our employees are trained and fully compliant before even stepping foot on our grounds and it also means they can do their training when it suits them from one central location.”

Working closely with CQUniversity to provide this flexible, simple but efficient online program, Concept Safety Systems has not only made sure the organisation is compliant but has implemented a strategy that can evolve, ensuring CQU is prepared for years to come.

It has also proved fundamental to the university in staff now being able to easily view online, not only the floor plans for every building, but a virtual exit strategy, making sure that they find the quickest and safest escape route when they need it most.

“I was really impressed with the high level of service we received,” says Mrs Stubbins. “Concept Safety Systems not only effortlessly undertook their analysis of our campuses but they also included us within all initial planning so that we became an integral part of the process.”

Now in operation throughout four CQUniversity campuses with plans to roll the programme into all new developments Concept Safety Systems’ Fire Evacuation Program has instilled a new confidence in CQUniversity with regards to its fire safety.

“We have a moral obligation to each and every staff member and our students to ensure their health and safety at all times,” says Mrs Stubbins. “Cost is really secondary. It’s more about having the knowledge that you’ve done the very best to train and support your staff and students to be prepared in the event of any emergency situation.”
